2013 south carolina football depth chart. The Gamecocks' depth chart for the UNC game features some mild surprises

Vonashek - all true freshmen - are listed as backups on the pre-UNC edition of the depth chart. The ability to redshirt true freshman offensive linemen is instrumental for cultivating quality, SEC-caliber depth, so seeing four true freshmen listed on the two deep is bound to raise some eyebrows.

But, considering that the offensive line is perhaps this team's most veteran unit, this shouldn't be too much of a concern. The only real surprise in the linebacking corps is that once-projected WLB starter Cedrick Cooper is not even listed as a reserve.

Cooper's hyperextended elbow has kept him out much longer than the 10 days to 2 weeks that he was initially expected to miss. Among the true freshmen in the mix, Skai Moore stands the best chance to see the field in Linebackers coach Kirk Botkin has praised Moore throughout fall camp for his ability to pick up the complexities of the Gamecocks' defense at a much faster rate than most true freshmen.

Not unlike Pharoh Cooper, Jamari Smith switched positions in the middle of fall camp, and it comes as something of a surprise to see him passing over Rico McWilliams as the backup to Jimmy Legree. Steve Spurrier is known for many things. One of those things is his aversion to kicking field goals , which should only be intensified by the fact that he will have true freshman Elliott Fry attempting field goals and PATs on Thursday night.

Fry's emergence comes as a surprise to most of us at Garnet And Black Attack, as evidenced by how heavily we threw our editorial weight behind Landon Ard. Despite Spurrier's apparent confidence in the youngster Fry, Gamecock fans figure to be more nervous than usual should the season opener end up being decided by a last-minute field goal.

The Gamecocks' depth chart for the UNC game features some mild surprises. Reddit Pocket Flipboard Email. Al Messerschmidt. Oh hi there, Pharoh Cooper When Pharoh Cooper was being recruited as a multi-position prospect out of Havelock, NC, the buzz was that he'd have a chance to come in early and make an impact as a punt returner, but I don't think anyone thought that Pharoh would be entering the North Carolina game just one play away from lining up as the starting slot receiver for the Gamecocks, especially after he opened fall camp working with the safeties.

Hey, what's with all of the true freshman offensive linemen? Surratt Gerald Dixon, Jr. Wait, I thought Jamari Smith was a running back Not unlike Pharoh Cooper, Jamari Smith switched positions in the middle of fall camp, and it comes as something of a surprise to see him passing over Rico McWilliams as the backup to Jimmy Legree. Bruce Ellington-Jr. Damiere Byrd-Jr. Nick Jones-Jr. Rory Anderson-Jr. Jerell Adams-So. Corey Robinson-Jr. Mike Matulis-Jr. Kyle Harris-So. Ronald Patrick-Sr. Brandon Shell-So.

Cody Gibson-Jr. Chaz Sutton-Sr. Gerald Dixon-So. Phillip Dukes-So. Both are gone. This year, I have a feeling that Kaiwan Lewis steals this spot from positional journeyman Chaun Gresham. Incoming freshman Lorenz Bryant has the size and speed to play this role.

Again, this is a wide open race. I'm going with the exciting tight end-turned linebacker to start at the weakside position. Rainey was an excellent two-way player coming out of high school. Many teams wanted him as a linebacker and the Gamecocks gave him a shot at tight end. However, he's now an athletic linebacker who has great speed and awareness to go along with his 6'3" pound frame.

He could be a superstar. Backing up Rainey will be Mason Harris, an undersized defensive end who has made the switch as well.

The linebacker position will depend a great deal on the athletic youngsters who are still finding their way. Sharrod Golightly will take the place of the excellent DeVonte Holloman. Golightly has swagger and is an aggressive player.

He is a vicious hitter for his size, which may be his biggest weakness. Holloman was a load at 6'2" and pounds, while Golightly registers in at 5'10" and pounds. He is a much faster player. Jordan Diggs should get an expanded role in the defense as well. This versatile player played sparingly his freshman year, but he has good speed and instincts. He could push Golightly for the starting position. Victor Hampton has a mean streak.

This is a good think. This returning starter has all the qualities you need in order to be a top-shelf corner. He's a great hitter. He's fast, built well and can jump. However, his head isn't always in the games. He needs to become more of a leader on the field.

Learn to talk a bit less and drop those dumb penalties he's known for. He should also learn to find a better balance between taking risks and making the smart play. He tends to get jumpy to make a pick and gets burned. Ahmad Christian has elite speed. He could grow into a great starting corner. He'll sit behind the excellent Hampton for now, but he'll make plays in Jimmy Legree was shockingly good this year. The junior outplayed Akeem Auguste in almost every conceivable way. He made big plays and showed an intelligence that some corners lack.

Rico McWilliams started off as a sensation during the spring camps and all the way through summer. McWilliams looked destined to start or play a massive role with the team. Hard hitting and flying all over the field, this player just stood out.

Then he tore a ligament that required surgery during an 7 on 7 drill. If he comes back fully healthy, he'll be here backing up Legree.

Brison Williams was last years starter and did a tremendous job. He'll keep this role. He's another heady player who seems to be a solid tackler. Young T. Gurley should end up backing him up.
